Glenfarg and Duncrievie in Bloom was established in 2006. In
just its second year, the local community, both business and
residential, has again risen to the challenge of the organisation's
logo: A community making a difference.

Making a difference in Glenfarg and Duncrievie
An introduction
Kate Armstrong, from the In Bloom team, provides an overview
of just some of the community involvement and second year successes
of this fantastic group of volunteers:
We have maintained and strengthened our links with the primary
school, the scouts and the brownies. In addition we have enrolled
the ladies of the church flower committee to maintain our new
display at the church. This is only one example of our introduction
of a display/area adoption scheme which has been a huge success.
| The geographical nature of
Glenfarg and Duncrievie has meant that our displays and
maintained areas are not centralised, creating difficulties
in providing basic care such as watering. However the
new adoption scheme includes sixteen separate displays
or areas being cared for by individuals or neighbours
or groups such as the church ladies or the school children
during term time, allowing the watering rota to concentrate
on the centralised displays only. |

In conjunction with the Keep Scotland Beautiful campaign we
enlisted the help of our primary school eco committee in carrying
out a village litter pick. We obtained colourful tabards, badges
and collection bags. The recyclables were even separated for
appropriate disposal. The following pictures speak for themselves!
Again Glenfarg and Duncrievie in Bloom has benefited from
the 10 willing greenhouse owners, who grew on our plug plants,
and the many gardeners who donated plants both annual and
perennial.
In October we held our planting with more than 2,000 bulbs
planted at both north and south ends of the village. A total
of 22 volunteers, including nine children, completed the task
over a weekend. The wonderful spring weather resulted in a
wonderful splash of colour but all too soon it was time to
dead head.
Our business community not only rose to the challenge of
financial sponsorship as previously mentioned but also donated
goods and services free of charge. These included use of heavy
lifting equipment, donations of slabs, cement, wood, containers
and paint and several hours labour.
Not everyone is able to physically lend a hand but we enjoy
the support of all ages at our fundraising events with our
hotelier providing free accommodation. Even our watering trolley
benefits from free maintenance by our garage owner.

We are at the final stages of the maps
for Glenfarg Green, which was handed over to Glenfarg
and Duncrievie in Bloom by Mr and Mrs Lascelles when
they left the village.
A main panel will be erected at the entrance gate on
Greenbank Road. At the pond side on Ladeside, the panel
will also include a history of the green, with 'before'
and 'after' photos. |
More than 100 trees in the green have all been identified
and are being lables. It has been quite an exercise getting
the correct names, Latin and Botanical!

Funding has been received from BBC Breathing places.

2007 highlights
Glenfarg and Duncrievie in Bloom are winners at the 2007 Pride
in Perthshire awards. Find out more here!
Our second year began with the wonderful sponsorship of our
North Main Street permanent planting by Dupplin Nursery who
provided us with plants and expertise in establishing an all
year colourful, easily maintained attractive area. Our planning
and organisation has moved into the 21st century with use of
computerised records and 'mind-mapping' software. This has led
to greater structure and information sharing.
Our big environmental project this year was to clear, membrane and chip a
strip of land adjacent to the footpath along Main Street.
This involved many man-hours, volunteers and local business
contributions and full details follow.
Fundraising this year has again been highly successful with
a Family Fun Quiz and Carol Singing both brightening the winter
months. In addition we have gained from a house party and
Quiz sheets but our biggest financial gains this year came
from introducing Sponsorship of individual displays by our
business community. Our accounts have been examined and we
are in a very secure financial position as we start to plan
year three.
| Again the community of Glenfarg and Duncrievie
has been fully involved and committed to the success of
the group. We have had over 100 volunteers involved physically
at various times, there are 42 names on the watering rota
list (albeit not many used so far this year), our remote
planters and displays have been 'adopted' by neighbours
and organisations, 10 local businesses have donated time,
materials and/or money and the local primary school helped
us in our litter collection. We have now joined with the
school eco committee in the creation of their wildlife
garden and outdoor classroom. |

Our volunteers are invaluable! Why not join us and make
a difference?

The pond at the village green - a favourite with families
from near and far!
|
At the invitation of a resident we have
facilitated the transfer of the Glenfarg Green from private
to public ownership. We will continue as stewards of this
village asset whilst the basic maintenance is undertaken
by Perth and Kinross Council.
Our publicity department works hard at promoting Glenfarg
and Duncrievie in Bloom at every opportunity with the
local press in addition to village publications. We now
feature on the website www.glenfarg.org!
|
| We have maintained close links with
Perth and Kinross Council and we have a representative
on Glenfarg Community Council.
Through this, and our direct approaches, we have had
the War Memorial restored, speed signs improved or
replaced, street lighting poles refurbished and telephone
exchange land maintained. We also refurbished our
neglected red telephone kiosk. |
 |
We continue to recycle and reuse and this year we have acquired
second-hand planters, used waste wood in Elm Row project, used
wood chipping as mulch, used old packing crates as planters
and provided much of our own compost.
